How night guards and bite splints are designed
A splint works through its occlusal surface, not its bulk. The design starts from the scanned arches mounted at the therapeutic vertical dimension, and the occlusal table is built flat and even so every opposing cusp lands with the same intensity at the same moment.
Guidance is then added: canine or anterior ramps that disclude the posterior teeth in excursion, angled to the movement recorded in the scan rather than to a default value. Retention comes from controlled engagement of the buccal undercuts, tight enough to stay seated overnight and loose enough for the patient to remove it.
Thickness and border extension are adjusted to the indication — a bruxism guard, a Michigan splint and a repositioning appliance are not the same object — and the file is exported for printing or milling.
