Hybrid Denture Design: What Labs Need to Know

7 min read

What a hybrid denture is

A hybrid denture is a fixed, screw-retained full-arch prosthesis supported by implants, typically four to six. It combines the teeth and pink gingiva of a denture with the fixed retention of an implant bridge. The patient cannot remove it; the clinician can, by unscrewing it.

It is often linked to All-on-4 and All-on-X treatment, but the term describes the prosthesis, not the surgical protocol.

Common designs

Labs usually produce hybrid dentures in one of these ways:

  • Titanium or cobalt-chrome bar with acrylic or composite teeth and gingiva on top
  • Titanium bar with zirconia or PMMA superstructure
  • Monolithic zirconia or PMMA prosthesis directly on multi-unit abutments
  • Printed or milled PMMA provisional, used as a try-in and as the reference for the final

Start from the tooth setup

A hybrid denture is designed backwards: first the teeth, then the support. The approved tooth setup — from a try-in, a wax-up, the existing denture or a digital setup — defines the vertical dimension, the lip support, the midline and the occlusal plane.

The bar or framework is then designed inside that envelope, so there is enough space for the teeth and the gingival material on top. Designing the bar first and adding the teeth afterwards is one of the most common causes of bulky prostheses and weak veneering areas.

What the designer needs

For a hybrid denture we typically ask for:

  • Scan with scan bodies on every implant or multi-unit abutment
  • Implant system and multi-unit abutment library
  • Approved tooth setup, existing denture scan or try-in scan
  • Bite registration and antagonist scan
  • Facial photos for midline, smile line and lip support
  • Chosen material and production method

Design checks before production

Passive fit on all implants, screw channels that exit through the occlusal or lingual surfaces, enough material thickness around each screw access, and a cleanable intaglio surface so the patient can use floss or a water flosser under the prosthesis.

Distal cantilevers must be kept within what the implant positions and material can support; the clinician sets the limit, and the design follows it. Occlusion is checked for even contacts and smooth excursions.

Outsourcing hybrid denture design

We design bars, frameworks and full-arch superstructures for hybrid dentures remotely, starting from your tooth setup. Full-arch cases include 1–3 revision rounds, and additional redesigns caused by new clinical instructions may be quoted separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is a hybrid denture?
A screw-retained, implant-supported full-arch prosthesis, usually a framework or bar with teeth and gingiva, or a monolithic design.
What do you need to design a hybrid denture?
Scans with scan bodies, the implant system, an approved tooth setup or wax-up, the opposing arch and bite, and the chosen material and design type.
How many revisions are included for hybrid denture design?
Full-arch cases include 1–3 revision rounds. Additional redesigns caused by new clinical instructions may be quoted separately.
