Partial Denture Design: A Case Submission Checklist

Define what you want designed

A request for a partial denture can mean different deliverables: an RPD framework, a tooth setup and denture base, or a coordinated design around existing restorations. Describe the requested output rather than relying on the case label alone. This guide covers the handoff to a remote designer, not the clinical choice of prosthesis.

Include the arch, tooth numbering system and teeth to replace. Identify any teeth scheduled for extraction or restorations that have not yet been completed. The clinician provides the treatment prescription; unresolved clinical decisions should be clarified before design starts.

Send scans that match the stage of the case

The required records depend on the prescribed workflow. Supply the relevant working arch, opposing arch and bite record, with clear identification of what each file represents. The working scan should capture the remaining teeth and the areas needed for the requested design. Missing surfaces cannot be reconstructed reliably from a photograph.

If the case includes surveyed crowns, attachments or an existing framework, include those records and explain which version is approved. Do not mix pre-treatment scans with updated scans without labeling their role. The lab and clinician should confirm that the records represent the intended design stage.

Make the prescription unambiguous

The designer needs the material and production route before preparing output. A castable pattern, a direct-metal framework and a denture base with a separate tooth setup are not interchangeable deliverables. State any lab-specific requirements and provide the relevant manufacturer instructions rather than assuming a universal parameter set.

  • Case reference, arch and tooth numbers to replace
  • Requested deliverables: framework, base, tooth setup or coordinated parts
  • Clinician-approved prescription and any marked-up design reference
  • Material, manufacturing route and requested file format
  • Relevant existing crowns, attachments or prostheses
  • Areas requiring clarification and the person who can approve changes

Use existing dentures as labeled references

An existing prosthesis can help communicate tooth position, appearance and features the patient wants to keep. Explain whether it is a reference only or a design to reproduce, and identify what needs changing. Photographs can support communication but do not replace a reliable bite record or the clinical information required for the case.

Use a consistent case reference across files and send only patient information needed for the work. Check that you are authorized to share the records through the chosen transfer method.

Agree on review before production

Before manufacturing, the lab and clinician should review the proposed design against the prescription and the supplied records. Record requested changes clearly, preferably on annotated screenshots, and identify the version approved for production. A design preview does not verify clinical fit or replace the prescribed try-in and final checks.

For a remote quote, send the records and specify the partial denture deliverables you need. DM Dental Design will confirm the scope and turnaround before starting; the lab keeps control of production and the clinician remains responsible for clinical decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a partial denture request the same as an RPD framework request?
Not necessarily. Specify whether you need a framework, a base and tooth setup, or coordinated components so the design scope can be confirmed.
Can I send an existing denture as a reference?
Yes. Label it as a reference or a design to reproduce, and explain the approved features and requested changes.
What if a scan or prescription detail is missing?
Identify what is missing and clarify it with the responsible lab or clinician before the design proceeds.
